I was watching a morning show today, and during their news segment, the newscaster mentioned that so-and-so congressmen (3 of them, all related to each other, to be exact) had millions of pesos in declared assets.
While that may be true, I do not understand its relevance at this time. The only reason I could think of for this topic to crop up NOW is because a congressman (who had met an untimely accident) had a declared net worth of only P50,000 with assets of P110,000 and liabilities of P60,000.
Is there any contest going on right now as to the richest or poorest government employee?
I think not.
If there’s a need for someone to know these figures, I presume they can be pulled up from the records of the proper government agency.
So why bother mentioning the figures from their Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) at this time? And in the news at that.
